THE THANKSGIVING WORLD ASSEMBLY --- by Phillip M. Ramsaroop

The participation by the Hindu community, the ethnic food and the display of our cultural heritage in the form of dance and music left vivid memories in the minds of the delegates. These undoubtedly left a positive image of Hinduism in this part of the world. Furthermore the delegates were truly impressed with the enthusiasm of the citizens who turned out to welcome them. It was a delightful gathering of many world figures including the Archbishop of Canterbury, Cardinal Arinze, Dr. Seshagiri Rao, Dr. Muzamil Siddiqi, Jagad Guru Ramanandacharya, Rabbi Steinsaltz, Sir John Templeton, venerable Achok Rinpoche of the Dalai Lama. The workshops and joint sessions were excellent. The delegates believe the theme 'Thanksgiving and Gratitude' is a key element for understanding, appreciation and healing in the world. While this seemed to be the consensus, each in their own way agreed that too many atrocities have been and are still being committed in the name of religion. There is a need for healing and for finding common ground where all can co-exist peacefully and where each can have a better understanding and appreciation for each other. Diversity is not a basis for dividing us, rather it makes us vibrant, provides alternatives and makes us richer.

If there is enough interest, we can become more active in the interfaith committee within our temple and continue this journey of exploration and sharing. It not only gives us a better understanding and appreciation for other faiths and cultures, but it also affirms our own faith and makes us stronger and knowledgeable in our own faith.
